Install the chat widget

One line of code puts the chat on your site. You copy it from the app, paste it on every page, then let the app check it.

Last updated

1. Copy your code

  1. In the app, go to Settings › Widget.
  2. Next to your chat widget, click Install. (On Home, Get the widget code opens the same dialog.)
  3. Under Copy the code, click Copy code.

It looks like this, with your workspace name in data-org (the part of your support email address before the @):

<script src="https://app.retily.com/v1/widget.js" data-org="your-workspace"></script>

The code is the same on every page, and it works anywhere in the page. A second chat widget has its own code, with a data-widget too.

2. Add it to every page of your site

In the dialog, pick what your website is built with. It shows these steps, with the code next to them.

HTML
Open your site’s HTML, or the template every page shares. Paste the code just before the closing </body> tag. Save, then upload or publish the change.
WordPress
Go to Plugins › Add New Plugin, then install and activate WPCode. Go to Code Snippets › Header & Footer. Paste the code in the Footer box, then click Save Changes. On WordPress.com, adding plugins needs a paid plan.
Shopify
Go to Online Store › Themes. Next to your current theme, click the … button, then Edit code. Open theme.liquid (under Layout) and paste the code just before </body>. Click Save. After a theme update or a new theme, add the code again.
Wix
In your site’s dashboard, go to Settings, then Custom Code (under Development and integrations). Click + Add Custom Code, paste the code and give it a name. Choose All pages, Load code once, and Body - end, then click Apply. Publish your site: custom code doesn’t run in the editor. Wix runs custom code only on a Premium plan with a connected domain.
Squarespace
Open Code Injection: in the Pages panel, under Custom code (on older sites, Settings › Advanced). Paste the code in the Footer box. Click Save. Code Injection needs a Core, Plus or Advanced plan.
Webflow
Open your project’s Site settings, then the Custom code tab. Paste the code in Footer code, then click Save changes. Publish your site. Site-wide custom code needs a paid Site plan or a paid Workspace plan.
Google Tag Manager
Use the Tag Manager code the dialog shows on this tab, not the one-line code: Tag Manager drops the data-org of a pasted script tag. In your container, go to Tags › New, then Tag Configuration › Custom HTML. Paste it. Under Triggering, choose All Pages, then click Save. Click Submit, then Publish.

3. Check your site

  1. In the same dialog, under Check your site, type your site’s address, or click one of Your sites.
  2. Click Check installation. The check reads that one page.
  • Installed: the code is on that page, or the widget has already loaded on that site.
  • We didn’t find the code: check that your change is saved and published. If your site adds the code with JavaScript, or through Tag Manager, open your site once, then check again.
  • It says when a page has the code of another of your widgets, or of another workspace. Replace it with your code.

The first time the widget loads on your site, Home’s Get started step ticks itself and you get a notification: “Your widget is live on” your site. Chats from your site arrive in Chat.

Installed, but no chat on your site?

On Settings › Widget, open the widget with its pencil button (Edit) and look at Allowed Domains. Empty means any site. Otherwise your site must be on the list, one domain per line: a domain also covers its subdomains. The check does not look at this list, so it can say Installed for a site the widget refuses. A widget that is switched off shows nothing either.

More widgets and the contact form

  • Chat widgets and contact forms per plan: Starter: 1 chat widget and 1 contact form; Growth: 5 chat widgets and 5 contact forms; Pro: unlimited chat widgets and 25 contact forms. A new chat widget starts as a copy: use the Duplicate button on one you have.
  • A contact form’s Install gives two lines: a <div id="retily-form"></div> and a script. Paste them in your page, at the spot where the form should appear.
  • The Preview button on the widget list opens the widget in a new tab, for your team only.
  • Want to track chats in your analytics, or open the chat from your own button? See the widget JavaScript API.
